Scharmützelbob (2012)

Close to the town of Fürstenwalde/Spree you will find the Scharmützelbob, an Alpine Coaster from Wiegand, well signposted in a wooded area. However, the Lake Scharmützel, which gives the coaster its name, is a few kilometres away.

The ride, which was built in 2010, is one of the younger representatives of its kind and features two lifts which are not installed at the beginning and the end of the ride, but which, like many Minetrain roller coasters, initiate two rapid descents. Due to the compact design of the ride another factor of complexity is brought into play, which is simply missing on the very simple track layouts of comparable rides and provides more dynamics and fun.

The Scharmützelbob is a pretty good Alpine Coaster, which is mainly due to its route and the quite fast downhill runs after the lifts. Compared to the great rides Hasenhorn Coaster and the Trapper Slider in Fort Fun Abenteuerland in Bestwig, the ride is not as exciting despite its twisted course, but it is much more impressive than most of the other ones of its kind. A ride is therefore highly recommended.

A tour through Steinwasen Park

Steinwasen Park

Since 1974, Steinwasen Park has been attracting its guests with some wild animals to the vicinity of the village of Oberried in the Black Forest. With two parallel running summer toboggan runs they offered relatively early another attraction for their park guests. After the new entrance building was constructed, a Mack Powered Coaster and a Wiegand bobkart track were stationed in the basement shortly afterwards. Since the construction of the spinning raft ride by ABC Rides in 2008 at the latest, the park has also become better known nationwide.

After you have paid the price for the wristband you will first of all be confronted with the local patriotism of the park. Those who haven’t noticed it before know that they are in the Black Forest and that the whole thing is designed so lovingly and in such detail that one might think they are not in a small park.  Besides a dark ride and several small cinemas, there is also the park gastronomy on this floor.

Via a staircase you can make your way up to the ice world, which once again was too original and professional for such a park. Unfortunately, the entrance to the two attractions that drive through the ice world is at a completely different place in the park. So instead of on our way to the attractions we found ourselves in one of the helices of the Powered Coaster.

River Splash

In the outer area of Steinwasen Park there are wildlife enclosures and the above mentioned spinning raft ride River Splash. To reach it you have to leave behind an unconventional path with a helix and numerous serpentines. In order to give the onlookers an impression of the ride, there is a platform on the first helix of the water ride. The highlight of the ride is surely the impressive vertical lift, the following curves manage to make the boat turn well, but the purpose of a rafting ride is, as always, not reached with this type of attraction, as one does not get wet.

Space Runner and Gletscherblitz

When you finally reach the entrance to the attractions in the basement of the main building you have to choose between the Space Runner or the Gletscherblitz. While the Space Runner bobsled run offers a nice, fast, if somewhat jerky ride, the Powered Coaster Gletscherblitz scores with an interesting track and great effects.

The Berg Rodelbahn luges

The cable car takes you up to the entrance of the luges, which features a rather strange sled. As it had no real stiffness when folded out, the ride was a bit worrying, even though this was most likely an unfounded feeling, but it prevented me from going full throttle. Should there be bad weather, there is the possibility to arrive dry on the roofed side of the double layout.

Game Park and Suspended Bridge

If you are afraid of heights, there is the possibility to walk to the starting point of the luge through the game park, but since the way down is easier, it is recommended to take the chair lift and to walk down the zoo from top to bottom. The enclosures are quite large, although it may take some time to discover the animals due to the mountainous terrain. At about half way there is the possibility to walk on the longest adventure bridge in the world and enjoy the view.

An afternoon in Thale

Preface

Since my father wanted to be picked up from the Magdeburg airport, about 30 km away from the state capital, in Cochstedt, I was drawn to the east of the republic, of course with a little stopover. On the access road to the city of Thale I had some doubts if the whole thing was such a good idea, but the closer I came to the cable cars, the better I felt. Arrived at the Seilbahnen Thale Erlebniswelt, I immediately went on a discovery tour through the park that is divided into four areas. The fun park 1 with chair lift and a quite attractive high ropes course, the cable car with miniature golf under the first support, the witches’ dance square with theatre, animal park and Alpine Coaster, as well as a little aside the fun park 2.

Hexenbesen

The latter area contains the only flying coaster in Germany, a trampoline and a few bumper boats and is rather small. The Hexenbesen is only permitted up to a weight of 65kg, which is why I was a bit worried about getting stuck during my ride. The ride itself is not very fast and is like a wacky worm except for the different riding postion. Only the accelerator shortly before the end of the ride is quite funny. The degree of freedom in the tube is, as soon as you manage to crawl in it, quite big.

Harzbob

With a combi-ticket in hand, the gondola lift took us up high. But don’t worry, for people with fear of heights there is the possibility to come by car to the witches’ dance square. After a few meters of walking I already took a seat in the Harzbob, the Alpine Coaster of the Seilbahnen Thale Erlebniswelt. Unfortunately, the ride was a bit slow and the track needed time to get up to speed, so despite the very friendly staff, the Harzbob doesn’t finish far up. The Harzbob is roughly comparable to the Weserberglandbob in Bodenwerder.

Funpark 1

Back in the valley I was drawn to the last roller coaster of the Seilbahnen Thale Erlebniswelt. It is located in Funpark 1 and is a genuine butterfly made by Heege. The ride was very quiet and luckily not as short as the one in the Tierpark Nadermann. Also here I had to invest one Euro.

Before I left the city, I went up to the chairlift for one last ride. There is a fairy tale pavilion at the top, but as it costs money and the last ride of the day was getting closer and closer, I decided to go back down and walk through Thale instead.
