The mountain coaster at Steinwasen Park

Since my last visit to Steinwasen Park, not much has happened in the park itself. In 2014, an Alpine Coaster from the Wiegand company opened in the park. In the meantime, the Schwarzwaldpark was acquired and converted into Tatzmania Löffingen.

Parallel to the chairlift, we climb the lift of the coaster. At the top, we slowly pick up speed over a few waves and curves before we enter the first helix. After a few bends, the second helix awaits us. Now much faster, we can have a race with the two luge tracks for a while. But even this is only short-lived, as we immediately turn off to the left. Far above an animal enclosure, we make our way to another helix. This is followed by a fairly straight path with only one wave, which leads us to the finale of the ride. This also takes place through a helix.  

The Coasterbahn is a very gentle alpine coaster with a pleasant length. The ride basically offers no real highlight; with the exception of a few waves, there are only helices and a few leisurely curves, but that’s about it. As a starter ride before the nearby Hasenhorncoaster in Todtnau, the ride is certainly not a bad choice.

Inselberg Funpark (2020)

The Inselberg Funpark not so far away from the Ski- und Rodelarena Wasserkuppe, is a Wiegand Erlebnisberg – a small showcase amusement park of the manufacturer Wiegand. Here you can find besides a classical luge, a Luna Loop and Nautic Jet by Heege, as well as the prototype of the Wie-Flyer Suspended Powered Coaster.

For many years, I wanted to give the Wie-Flyer a try, but sadly never found my way to this corner of Thuringia. Therefore, I missed to ride the ride with its original encaged vehicles. Nowadays, the cars are far more open and provide a ride experience very similar to that of a suspended coaster. As you can also control the speed of the vehicles, you can influence your experience similar to a Bobkart ride by the same manufacturer – a ride which can be found in amusement parks all over the world.

The ride starts with a right-hand bend, which goes over in a large downhill helix to the left. In two serpentine curves we then gain a bit of altitude. This is followed by a long wavy stretch of track, which makes it passengers giggle like crazy. After a left-hand bend this section is repeated. In the courtyard of the first helix, we take an upward leading spiral back to the starting height of the ride. After a longer straight and a left-hand curve, we reach the end of this surprisingly funny ride.

A visit to the luges of Pottenstein

I can understand if you don’t run your luge due to the wetness of your track. I can also understand, that you don’t open anything where somebody might hurt himself due to the slippery underground and may even fall to the ground on your awesome looking Skywalk viewing platform. But Wiegand, why did you not operate your small suspended coaster Hexenbesen? It was the only reason why I had to stop at the Erlebnisfelsen Pottenstein on my way back from Munich to Hamburg and you did not operate it even though your website stated other things.

Don’t get me wrong. The route via Pottenstein is just gorgeous and I needed a break of all those road works anyways. It was interesting to see your new facilities, but it would have been nicer if I could use the bought ticket on more than just one of your rides. The Frankenbob is a beautiful looking Alpine Coaster, but unluckily it is also a rather tame one. The Frankenrodel on the other hand is just a nice luge and your Hexenbesen at least looks great and interesting. I’m pretty sure your expansion of the Rodelmekka Pottenstein was the right choice. I just can’t see it, if you don’t operate your rides at the Erlebnisfelsen Pottenstein in the late afternoon on a quiet Monday.
