Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, Texas, is where the Six Flags story began. Opened in 1961 between Dallas and Fort Worth, the park was built around themed areas representing the different nations that had governed Texas throughout its history – the inspiration behind the Six Flags name. The concept proved successful and eventually grew into one of the largest amusement park chains in North America.

More than six decades later, Six Flags Over Texas still has a surprisingly varied collection of rides. Roller coasters such as New Texas Giant, Mr. Freeze: Reverse Blast and Titan are among the major attractions, while the historic Runaway Mine Train represents a much earlier generation of coaster design. Classic rides, family attractions and several original sections of the park add plenty to explore beyond the larger coasters.

Despite decades of expansion, parts of the original Six Flags Over Texas can still be found throughout the park. Historic buildings and older attractions sit alongside modern thrill rides, giving the park a sense of history that feels fitting for the place where Six Flags began.

Fun Fact #1: The El Aserradero is the world’s first log flume. Due to its popularity it was extended by a second track a few years after its premiere.

Fun Fact #2: In order to prevent the arms of the New Texas Giant roller coaster from extending out as far as possible due to the narrow clearance profile, the train built by Gerstlauer has Plexiglas panes on the sides.

Fun Fact #3: The theme park can be played in the computer game Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 as a scenario.
