Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland, was an amusement park located between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Its history stretched back to the 1970s, when the property first welcomed visitors as a wildlife and Wild West attraction. After several changes in concept and ownership, the park became Adventure World before joining the Six Flags family and reopening as Six Flags America in 1999.

Over the years, Six Flags America developed into a regional amusement park with a mix of roller coasters, thrill rides and family attractions. Superman: Ride of Steel was one of its signature rides, joined by the wooden Wild One, the launched coaster Joker’s Jinx and Batwing, one of the few remaining flying coasters of its kind. The adjacent Hurricane Harbor water park was also included with admission for much of the park’s history.

After more than 25 years under the Six Flags name, Six Flags America permanently closed at the end of the 2025 season. Its long and sometimes unusual history left behind a park that went through numerous transformations while serving generations of visitors from Maryland and the greater Washington, D.C. area.

Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, has been one of the major amusement parks on the East Coast since opening in 1974. Originally created by businessman Warner LeRoy as part of an ambitious entertainment complex, Great Adventure was acquired by Six Flags only a few years later and has continued to grow ever since. Alongside the amusement park, the extensive safari has remained an important part of the destination for decades.

Roller coasters are at the heart of Six Flags Great Adventure. The park is home to a large and varied collection that includes Nitro, El Toro, Jersey Devil Coaster and the launched coaster The Flash: Vertical Velocity. Beyond the coasters, numerous thrill rides and family attractions fill the expansive park, while the Wild Safari offers a completely different experience with animals from around the world.

With its extensive coaster lineup, large park grounds and the neighboring safari, Six Flags Great Adventure has plenty to fill a full day. More than 50 years after opening, it remains one of the most important amusement parks in the northeastern United States.
