Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia, has been a major East Coast amusement park since opening in 1975. Developed by the same team behind Kings Island in Ohio, the two parks still share some unmistakable similarities. International Street welcomes guests at the entrance, while the park’s Eiffel Tower has remained one of its most recognizable landmarks for decades.

The coaster lineup ranges from the classic wooden Grizzly to the towering giga coaster Pantherian and the modern wing coaster Rapterra. Beyond the roller coasters, Kings Dominion offers a wide selection of thrill rides and family attractions, along with the included Soak City water park during the summer season.

Away from the major attractions, tree-lined pathways and spacious park areas give Kings Dominion a surprisingly relaxed atmosphere. Even on a busy day, there are plenty of quieter corners to explore between rides.

Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, has been one of the major amusement parks on the East Coast since opening in 1974. Originally created by businessman Warner LeRoy as part of an ambitious entertainment complex, Great Adventure was acquired by Six Flags only a few years later and has continued to grow ever since. Alongside the amusement park, the extensive safari has remained an important part of the destination for decades.

Roller coasters are at the heart of Six Flags Great Adventure. The park is home to a large and varied collection that includes Nitro, El Toro, Jersey Devil Coaster and the launched coaster The Flash: Vertical Velocity. Beyond the coasters, numerous thrill rides and family attractions fill the expansive park, while the Wild Safari offers a completely different experience with animals from around the world.

With its extensive coaster lineup, large park grounds and the neighboring safari, Six Flags Great Adventure has plenty to fill a full day. More than 50 years after opening, it remains one of the most important amusement parks in the northeastern United States.

Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, has been one of America’s leading amusement parks for roller coaster enthusiasts since opening in 1971. Originally known simply as Magic Mountain, the park became part of Six Flags in 1979 and has steadily expanded its ride collection ever since. Built across the hills north of Los Angeles, the park’s terrain has also shaped many of its attractions and gives Magic Mountain a layout unlike most traditional amusement parks.

Roller coasters are unquestionably the main attraction. Twisted Colossus, Tatsu, X2 and Full Throttle are just a few highlights in a collection that spans several generations of coaster design. Historic rides such as Revolution sit alongside much newer additions, while numerous thrill rides and family attractions fill the areas between them.

More than five decades after opening, Six Flags Magic Mountain remains a park built around roller coasters. The sheer variety of its collection, combined with the hilly setting and rides scattered across the property, makes exploring the park almost as much a part of the experience as riding the coasters themselves.
