Great hours above the rooftops of Barcelona

Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo

On the Tibidabo – the local mountain of the city of Barcelona – beside a church and a television tower, there is the Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo; one of the longest-running theme parks in Europe, which unfortunately is only an insider tip.

The ascent and descent on the Tibidabo are quite steep or even adventurous with the car, which is why it is worthwhile to climb the mountain with other means of transport, especially as these are deducted from the entrance fee and thus the possibility to have a closer look at the Catalan capital city is kept open.

Hurakan

If you enter the Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo through the lower entrance, you will find yourself next to the beautiful HUSS Top Spin Hurakan, which offers a decent ride; unfortunately the water fountains were not used. If you look up you can see a Zierer wave swinger circling about you.

Tibidabo Express

Continuing straight ahead you will find yourself in front of the first roller coaster, a Zamperla Powered Coaster called Tibidabo Express. The ride is quite strange, as it features an atypical layout without any helices. The funny zigzag track combination provides a very special ride. The tunnel at the beginning of the coaster makes the ride a bit more fun. Also the staff tries to create as much atmosphere as they can.

Castell Mysterios

After leaving the ride, you will unfortunately find yourself further down the hill, but you can visit the Castell Mysterios, an old walk-through ghost house with plenty of fun house elements. Unfortunately, it is somewhat too dark in here, such that you don’t necessarily know where to step. Nevertheless, the ride is off but awesome, which is also underlined by its musical background and should therefore be visited.

Muntanya Russa

The next highlight and our goal of desire is located at the highest point of the lowest level of the Parc d’Atraccoins Tibidabo. After an almost exhausting mountain ascent, passing some children’s rides and a boat swing, we find ourselves in the oval-shaped waiting area that spirals upwards. After having been assigned a place, we can start our journey on the Muntanya Russa.

After having climbed the lift for a few meters, a fantastic first drop takes you into a wonderful right-left curve, which you can experience much more slowly at Phantasialand’s Temple of the Nighthawk. The following spiral is superb and a bit more powerful, whereas the upcoming straight is more for recreation and for the view down into the valley, however it introduces the grand finale. The roller coaster itself is, like all other Vekoma MK-900s, very good, but not as intense and fast as Efteling’s Vogel Rok roller coaster. The great location and layout can compensate for that.

La Mina d’Or

A few meters further down you find the log flume ride La Mina d’Or by Reverchon, which – in contrast to other flumes by this manufacturer – offers a great, but also quite odd, costum built layout. The staff deserves a lot of recognition, as they ask politely if it would be so okay before they put a stranger in your boat.

Avio and Talaia

The rest of the Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo is located on building levels that can be reached either by stairs or elevators. Last possibility is supervised by staff, which also serves as the control between the actual park and the Skywalk named public area. The nostalgic rides are located up here, two of which are particularly interesting. First of all, there is Talaia; basically the prototype of all modern propeller rides with the only difference that this system rotates much slower and thus allows a wonderful view over the park and of course Barcelona and thereby releases much more adrenalin. The other main attraction at this level is the self-propelled airplane called Avio. Unfortunately, the queue on the day of the visit was far too long and therefore I decided not to take the ride.

Museo d’automats

One level below there is way too empty place of the former roller coaster Montaña Rusa, as well as the entrance to the Museo d’automats, which is definitely worth a visit. Here, you will find not only a detailed model of the park, but also some quite interesting devices from long forgotten times. A real treasure trove, especially for nostalgics.

Miramiralls

Another pearl of the Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo is the mirror maze Miramiralls, where the term maze does not fit very well, as it is more of an exhibition – indeed a very good one. Nearly everything you can do with mirrors is brought up.

Magatzem

The monorail dark ride Magatzem takes you into the world of magicians and witches, which is beautifully but strangely designed. A squeaky voice explains the whole thing, however without knowledge of the Catalan language this doesn’t help. At the end of the trip a surprise awaits you, which from my point of view just caught the right person.

Krüeger Hotel

Another floor below you will find a bumper car, but also the infamous Krüeger Hotel, a maze with outstanding quality and really dedicated staff. After the whirstbands has been marked, it’s time to visit the hotel.

After you were welcomed in the hotel lobby in a very nice and above all surprisingly frightening way, you pass through some hotel scenes until the horror movies take over. The Krüeger in the name of the maze is quickly explained by the appearance of Freddy himself. There are several scenes that are very amusing, in fact everything is designed to a very high level. The actors do their best and they constantly run after you, which is especially frightening in the last part of the maze, considering there’ s a life-size Chucky standing up and chasing you.

The Krüeger Hotel was the first Maze I truly loved. The scenes are awesome, everything is well lit and the maze is full of surprises.

Besides other children’s attractions and a 4D cinema, the park doesn’t offer much more, nevertheless it left a very good impression on me. All rides are very well maintained and they look as good as new, which strangely caused the other fellow travellers some concern, as they had the accident of the Fabbri Air Diver in the back of their minds and often blamed the park for it.

Conclusion Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo

No other Spanish park had as much charm as the Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo and no other park had such a nice staff as this park has. They also take care of the improvement suggestions of the customers – as long as they are meant seriously – and reply in a very personal email. I don’t know any other park taking so much care about it. The park will certainly see me again someday.

A magical afternoon at Magic Park Verden

Preface

Not far from the city of Verden an der Aller is the Magic-Park and therefore the only place in the triangle of Bremen, Hamburg and Hannover where there was something new for me to ride. The park is a similar children’s paradise like the Rasti-Land, which is 40 km away from Hanover, but gives a much better impression, even if the number of attractions here is a bit smaller.

Magic Park Verden

Familienachterbahn

Much of this park was bought second-hand and so it is not surprising that you sit in the former Seeschlange roller coaster of Hansa Park when riding the Familienachterbahn. Even if the train creeps a little over the hills, the ride within this family roller coaster with its four laps special is very entertaining. In direct comparison with the sister park in Hodenhagen this ride does a lot better.

Wildwasserbahn

A few meters aside the roller coaster is the log flume Wildwasserbahn of the Magic-Park, whose manufacturer is Big Country Motioneering Ltg. The track is very similar to an oval, only you have to pass some small curves before the chain lift. The first and only drop is very convincing and the degree of wetness is high.

Märchenwald

You can feel just like in the Dutch amusement park Efteling when you follow the fairytale trail. On the edge of the path you will find a total of six elaborately designed scenes that are brought to life by numerous animatronics. The individual fairy tales are also very well presented, even if I didn’t know the fairy tale about the flower miracle until now.

Miscellaneous

Past the ship swing Schiffschaukel, which you can operate yourself, we now go to the large playground part of the amusement park, where you can find some interesting play equipment, a vintage car ride and the Drachenbahn (a small monorail) from Metallbau Emmeln. Normally, every child should be able to use up his or her remaining energy in this part of the park.

Closing Words

For the roller coaster fans among us it is recommended to visit the park from 15:30 p.m., because then the entrance fee is only 10€ or nothing at all if there is nobody in the cash area. Also one could serve free drinks at the right moment, as at some snack stands there was nobody to be found. As I am honest I waited of course. Unfortunately many small amusement parks seem to want to do without money.

A roller coaster ride in Phantasialand

Phantasialand

Due to a competition with a low participation for the attraction Maus au Chocolat, which had not been opened yet, Phantasialand gave away several tickets for this year’s season. Since the time of my last visit in 2009 a lot has changed, for example the old Schwarzkopf dark ride Gondelbahn has been demolished. In addition, many new children’s rides from Zamperla have moved into the park, the neighbours have found a reason to complain – about the whisper-quiet water attraction Wakobato – and an extension is still far in the stars because of some environmental activists.

The first impression from the old entrance, which now only serves the shuttle guests, is quite nice, even though Main Street used to look nicer. The now present space looks quite strange at Phantasialand and the construction sites don’t fit into the ambience. A similar situation exists with the huge passage from Berlin to the fantasy area.

Fröhliche Bienenjagd

As one of the newer attractions, the Fröhliche Bienenjagd (Happy Bee Hunting) in particular was a good investment. From the outside, the ride can be quite inconspicuous, but this perception changes during the ride at a stroke when the car first dashes over the small hill. The corners of the mouth distort and a wide grin appears.

Hollywood Tour

The off-the beaten track located dark ride Hollywood Tour should separate itself from the old-fashioned theme, which is hardly recognisable during the ride. However, the ride is still more exciting than Pirates in Batavia at Europa-Park, where you can take a nap for 2/3 of the 20 mins journey. Still, there is so much more potential in this ride that can be used; a look at the current state of the ride is too much of an effort and should be avoided by any means.

Temple of the Nighthawk

One floor above the Hollywood Tour you will find the Vekoma roller coaster Temple of the Nighthawk. Unfortunately this roller coaster could hardly reproduce its once fast past ride. If you ride through the pitch dark with its constant changes of right and left curves at a snail’s pace, you can definitely do without the ride despite its outstanding length. Efteling’s Vogel Rok shows how intense comparable rides can be.

Winja’s Fear and Winja’s Force

Next door you have the choice between two mediocre spinning coasters, one of which is rather bad and the other simply better in almost every respect. Of course we are talking about Winja’s Fear and Winja’s Force. If you have to queue here for more than 30 minutes, only a ride on Winja’s Fear is worthwhile, as the layout tends to approach the top-class spinning coasters Dragon’s Fury and Crush’s Coaster due to its choice of elements. Only the special elements make the rides on both tracks an experience that you should – if still unknown – experience.

Race for Atlantis

If you walk up the hill, the first thing you encounter is the simulator Race for Atlantis, the highlight of which is the safety rap of the preshow if you are guided into one of the cabins at all, as the staff often forget the passengers. The simulation itself isn’t very worth mentioning, which is a shame, as the way the movie is shown has a lot of potential.

Talocan

The HUSS Suspended Top Spin Talocan is quite stylish from the outside, but always has the problem that more people watch than ride and therefore stand gawping in your way. The ride itself is balanced, intense and can score with its rollover series, which fortunately are longer than with an older Top Spin. You get the better – and also more stomach-friendly – ride on the spectator-directed side, as the wall doesn’t constantly rob you of your orientation.

Stonewash Creek and Wildwash Creek

If you enjoy the water, you can use two water playgrounds, the multi-storey rafting ride River Quest, as well as the two log flumes Stonewash Creek and Wildwash Creek. The left side of both rides has a much too short outlet, while the other side can be surprisingly wet. However, both rides are very in need of restoration and thus it wouldn’t be really surprising to see both rides soon levelled to the ground.

River Quest

With a little luck, the Hafema raft ride can make you more wet than the two log flumes together. However, if you are really lucky it can happen that you get soaked down to your underpants. But if you are damn very lucky, it can also happen that you are temporarily flooded with so much water that the other passengers in the boat cannot even see you for a short time. Amazingly, the shoes stayed dry, so there was no danger of catching blisters or other unfavourable stuff.

Mystery Castle

In order to get dry again, a trip on the nearby freefall tower can be taken. Unfortunately, the ride which is located in a high masonry does not offer, what it should offer. Basically, Mystery Castle is just a very loud elevator in a building. There is a lack of forces which prevents the ride of being as awesome as other Intamin installations worldwide.

Silbermine and Geisterrikscha

The Silbermine and Geisterrikscha dark rides were unfortunately not worth mentioning this time, although the Silvermine had no reputation to defend, as the ride is generally considered to be boring and, above all, lengthy. In the case of the Geisterrikscha, some of the scenes were literally made worse. If you don’t want to renew the entire ride, you should make sure that the charm of the ride is not damaged by your actions.

Feng Ju Palace

In the Feng Ju Palace – the Vekoma Mad House from Phantasialand – nothing wanted to run as it should. The projection towards the end of the ride missed the intended surface and was shown on the still spinning drum. At the end of the actual ride, this mistake caused the doors to be in a rather awkward position. After some time the drum was brought back to its starting position and the doors opened.

Black Mamba

It remains a mystery how the newspaper Bild titled the roller coaster Black Mamba as a crash-coaster, as the death of the person last Saturday was not caused by an accident, but by the carelessness of the victim. Despite all attempts to experience a crash by ourselves, the Black Mamba offered the solid ride for which it is well known. Since remaining seated in spite of empty seats is still not allowed and the queue is simply too long for such undertakings, we did not make many rides.

Colorado Adventure

One or two rounds – this time with remaining seated – were instead taken on the park’s showpiece roller coaster, the Colorado Adventure. The right side of the train became compulsory for friends of water sports, as it was not spared by the waterfall of the third lift. The strangely banked curves and the generally high speed make the ride one of the best of its kind, even though the back cushion is still not very comfortable.

Tikal

This year, in addition to a good and, above all, fast wave swinger made by Zierer, which also offers a wonderfully refreshing ride, two children’s free-fall towers from the same house were able to move into Phantasialand. Even if the size is deceptive, both towers of Tikal, as well as almost all children’s rides in Phantasialand, are very convincing. The ride is very surprising and unlike elsewhere it is very dynamic.

Conclusion Phantasialand

Phantasialand is a recommendable amusement park if you either have too much money or just won a card somewhere. Unfortunately, most rides are not worth mentioning anymore. It is also astonishing that several construction sites exist until the high season. Thus, there is unfortunately the hint that there are also other amusement parks in the vicinity of the city of Cologne that do a lot better than the park in Brühl. Phantasialand currently invests a lot, so the future remains open.
